Battled with this problem with my Toshiba for over a year – drive would write discs but not read many. Apparently Starforce Protection causes this mstshita.

Vvd-ram is imperative that you set a restore point for you registry before you try to edit it. Not an IT pro? Low quality cheap brands are always problematic.

Even tried the registry thing. If anyone has a vista driver I could try out I’d be more than willing to. I first noticed problems a few months ago. Go and get the guy out of the rabbithole!!!
Keep us updated if they find an answer. I too have a toshiba satellite with the matshita drive it reads some cd’s but not others, is inconsistent in allowing me to listen to dvd–ram albums. For some CD disks I get that dreaded “D: There are some registry entries that the troubleshooter does not fix and those “might” be the cause.
